There is more to Rishikesh than being an abode of Lord Ram and Laxman, than being a place of piligrimage. It's a paradise for adventure sports including Rafting, Trekking and Camping.
Distances to Rishikesh from
Haridwar - 25km
Dehradun - 42km
Delhi - 225km
One can fly to Dehradun or Delhi and then make a road trip to Rishikesh. You can reach Mooni Ki Rethi or Ram Jhoola and book yourself a Raft. But in case you are a huge group, advanced booking is advisable.
Ideal time for rafting is post lunch. Although the booking offices may suggest the first slot at 9.00am in the morning.
I did a 14km stretch. We started off from Shivpuri and rafted to Mooni Ki Rethi. We covered 2 Grade III rapids, 1 Grade IV and 4 Grade II rapids - 7 in all. Take your camera along. You can keep your valuables - electronic goods, wallets in the dry bag on the raft.
The 14km rafting will cost you only 600 INR; and if you are big enough a group to take an entire raft, then there might be a concession as well. All in all, the experience is worth the money you pay.
Apart from the 14km stretch, there is a 5 day Rafting-camping package. You raft 40km over 5 days and camp on the riveside over 4 nights. I am not sure if the camping equipment will be provided by the booking office. The 40km stretch is longer and tougher than the 14km stretch. You will take on upto Grade V rapids. This will cost a total of 15k per person, i.e., 3k per day over 5 days. If the camping equipment is provided by the booking office, its a worth while trip.
